As more time is spent working indoors, the quality of the air we breathe has become an increasingly important part of wellbeing. Studies show that in enclosed settings, indoor air can be 2–5 times more polluted than outdoor environments as the materials used in furniture and fittings quietly influence comfort and health over time, particularly through the release of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
For Workstories, this has led to a deeper focus on the materials that sit at the heart of every product. Beyond aesthetics and performance, each material choice is considered for its impact on the people who use the space day to day, recognising that healthier interiors are shaped as much by what cannot be seen as by what can.
This approach has been independently verified with the achievement of SCS Indoor Advantage™ Gold certification across Workstories’ Power & Electric, Accessories, Monitor Arms and Seating collections, alongside SCS Indoor Advantage™ certification for all tables, desk systems and case goods. Products are tested for 35 individual VOCs, including formaldehyde, against internationally recognised standards, including ANSI/BIFMA. Products awarded Gold certification also comply with the CDPH/EHLB standard.
The result is a portfolio that supports low-emission material requirements across BREEAM, LEED v4.1, WELL Building, BIFMA and Living Building Challenge frameworks, offering specifiers greater confidence, reduced risk and a clearer path to compliance, while creating working environments that prioritise long-term comfort, wellbeing and peace of mind.
